NEW ORLEANS — The Chateau Carre apartments in Gentilly are undergoing a nearly $11.4 million renovation to repair damages from Hurricane Katrina.

Construction on the project began Sept. 9 with completion slated for the fall of 2010.

F.H. Myers Construction Corp. of Harahan, La., is renovating the 150-unit development and constructing a small community building on the site.

The Renaissance Neighborhood Development Corp., which owns the complex, is redeveloping the departments with the help of the Volunteers of America National Services Corp. and Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans.

Officials plan to buy as many as 25 damaged single-family homes near Chateau Carre and either renovate or demolish them to make way for new moderate-income housing.

L. Dow Oliver & Associates of Metairie, La., designed the project.
