JACKSON, Miss. — Seven stimulus-funded projects totaling $23.2 million have been let in west Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation. They include:

• grade, drain, and bridge work on State Route 8 in Sunflower and Bolivar counties;

• improvements to the Interstate 55 Rest Area in Holmes County;

The State Route 8 work marks the beginning of a project designed to create a four-lane system connecting U.S. Highway 49 in Ruleville, Miss., to Highway 61 in Cleveland, Miss.

The stimulus money is also going toward upgrades of pavement sections that were beginning to show signs of duress, MDOT officials said.

MDOT has received nearly $354.6 million total in federal stimulus money. To date, $300.2 million has been obligated, and $54.5 million remains to be obligated.
