$13M N.O. school project wrapping up
NEW ORLEANS — More than one year after Mahalia Jackson Elementary School saw a reprieve from the wrecking ball, a full restoration at the 2101 Freret St. campus is nearing completion.
The $13 million renovation effort, overseen by Construction Masters Inc. of Metairie, La., began in February and is expected to be complete by February 2010, senior project manager Russell Stafford said.
“It’s a complete restoration, so everything but the substructure is getting replaced,” Stafford said.
The 50,000-square-foot campus received heavy damage during Katrina, Stafford said.
When the project is complete, the refurbished school will support 12 classrooms and as many offices and administrative centers, he said.
